Ken Whisenhunt Hired As New Titans Head Coach

Ken Whisenhunt

Ken Whisenhunt led the Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl six seasons ago.

The Titans are hoping he can repeat the feat in Tennessee.

Today the Titans turned their head coaching duties over the Whisenhunt, one day after his team was bounced from the playoffs, the San Diego Chargers.

Whisenhunt was serving as the offensive coordinator in San Diego, and did a fine job guiding an offense that was led by QB Phillip Rivers.

Now the Titans are banking that the 51-year-old can guide the Tennessee offense, led by QB Jake Locker and running back Chris Johnson.

The Titans spoke to Whisenhunt on Friday in San Diego.

He was the fourth candidate interviewed after Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell and Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer.

Whisenhunt began his coaching career at Vanderbilt, where he coached the Commodores’ special teams and tight ends from 1995-97.

He moved into the NFL the following year, and coached either tight ends or special teams for four teams — Ravens, Browns, Jets and Steelers.

Then in 2004 he was given the title of offensive coordinator for the Steelers, and a year later he earned a Super Bowl ring as the Steelers beat Seattle in Super Bowl XL.

He moved to Arizona two seasons later, and helped resurrect the career of quarterback Kurt Warner.

In the 2008 season, he wound up as the coach on the other side of the Steelers, and nearly led the Cardinals to their first title, falling just short in a 27-23 loss to Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XLIII.

Now the Titans have seen the resume, have spoken to him, and now trust him with their franchise. All in the hopes of seeing Whisenhunt lead the Titans back to the Super Bowl.
