Safety Anthony Smith Headed to Injured Reserve

The Titans will place veteran safety Anthony Smith on injured reserve after injuring his groin in Sunday’s 22-17 loss to the Saints.

A 2006 third-round pick (83rd overall) out of Syracuse by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Smith had carved out a role with the Titans in 2011 after splitting the 2009 and 2010 seasons between the Green Bay Packers, St. Louis Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars. In 13 games this season, Smith had 11 tackles –including seven on special teams, which ranked third on the team — and a pair of passes defensed.

To replace Smith, the Titans will promote safety Robert Johnson from the practice squad. Smith was a 2010 fifth-round pick out of Utah who has yet to appear in a regular season game, despite spending his entire rookie season on the active roster. Waived at the end of training camp, Johnson has been on the Titans’ practice squad since Week 1.

Cornerback Terrence Wheatley has been signed to the practice squad.
