DT Shaun Smith Takes Verbal Jabs at Mack and the Browns

As Shaun Smith heads back to Cleveland, where he ignited plenty of controversy during his days with the Browns, he is stirring things up again according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. This time his target is Browns center Alex Mack, the 21st overall selection of the 2009 draft.

They butted heads that offseason and in training camp before the Browns released Smith. They also squared off in a memorable battle last season when Smith was with the Chiefs.

“During his rookie year, I used to tell him he should give his money back. I used to tell him he wasn’t worth a first-round pick,” Smith said. “It’s nothing personal or anything like that. That’s just how I felt.”

Chances are Mack, who went to the Pro Bowl last year, doesn’t think as highly of Smith. Mack accused his former teammate of “grabbing his private parts” during their meeting last season.

“You can’t believe everything you hear,” Smith said on Friday. “The league sorted it all out — no fine.”

Smith acknowledged Mack is “pretty good, a decent player” and called him “a good guy.”

Smith was involved in other incidents while with the Browns. He allegedly punched quarterback Brady Quinn in the face. Eight months later, the Browns cut Smith in training camp, one day after he and defensive line coach Bryan Cox got into a spat at practice.

“My career got off to a better start in Cleveland. That’s when I became a full-time starter,” he said. “Now I was a little bitter when they let me go because of the situation with the new regime, but I look at everything as funny now because (Mangini), and the situation with Brady Quinn, they aren’t there any more either.

“So to me, I got the best of it. I got the last laugh at the end of the day.”
