Locker Looking Better Under Former Jets QB Ken O’Brien

The Tennessean reports that Titans new QB Jake Locker is already showing improvement under Ken O’Brien’s tutelage.

As an NFL quarterback for more than a decade, Ken O’Brien passed for 25,000-plus yards and was known for his accuracy. In retirement, he’s tutored quarterbacks and his most recent pupil is Tennessee Titans rookie Jake Locker. O’Brien says he likes what he sees from Locker so far. “The big thing about Jake is he is a competitor. When the chips are down, he is not looking around. He looks at himself to make things happen and that is evident from his game film and from being around him,” said O’Brien, who was a two-time Pro Bowl selection while playing for the Jets from 1983-92.

“Watching him work, he wants to do everything he can to be a better player. And that whole package is only going to get better. I really think he is going to be a great player.” Although Locker’s accuracy has been questioned after a career completion percentage of 53.9 at the University of Washington, O’Brien downplayed those concerns. The 6-foot-3, 231-pounder just needs reps, O’Brien said. “He is a gifted athlete with some tremendous athletic ability in addition to being able to throw the ball, so that running ability, with his size, he was able to take advantage of that in high school and in college. And you are trying to win games,” O’Brien said.

“A lot of guys in the dark ages, myself included, you’d drop back and throw the ball and rep it out millions of times. Jake’s never really had that experience. The more reps he did, the more comfortable he got. And as far as talent, he has all the talent in the world, so you just try and fine tune and tweak some things. He’s really been spinning the ball tremendously and he’s just going to get better and better the more he works with (Titans offensive coordinator) Chris Palmer. There is a learning curve certainly, but there is not a kid out there who’s going to work harder and who has more ability than he does, and I am sure he is going to take advantage of his opportunity.”
