TitansGab 2009 Titans Mock Draft 1.0

The NFL Draft is less than a month away, and there are plenty of rumors about where the Titans are going to go with their picks. In case you were wondering, the Titans have the following picks for the 2009 NFL Draft:

1st Round: 30th Pick
2nd Round: 30th Pick (60th overall)
3rd Round: 30th Pick (94th overall)
4th Round: 30th Pick (130th overall)
4th Round: 35th Pick (135th overall – Compensatory Pick)
5th Round: 37th Pick (173rd overall – Compensatory Pick)
6th Round: 30th Pick (203rd overall)
6th Round: 33rd Pick (206th overall – Compensatory Pick)
7th Round: 30th Pick (239th overall)
7th Round: 33rd Pick (242nd overall – Compensatory Pick)

So with those picks in mind, here is our first Titans Gab Mock draft:

1st Round: 30th Pick – Darius Butler, Connecticut, CB

The team needs a wide out, but I’m thinking that Torry Holt is going to join the club at some point in the near future, and with that, the team also needs some help and depth in the secondary, so Butler is the pick here. Missed all of November with a knee injury, but still made the All-Big East First Team. Butler had 37 tackles and four passes broken up. He’ll add some spark to the defensive backfield.

2nd Round: 30th Pick (60th overall) – Derrick Williams, Penn State, WR

Had a very solid Pro Day, and even though I think Holt will join this team, he and Nate Washington are not solid long term answers for Kerry Collins at the receiver spot. Williams has quick feet, is fast, and can make people miss. He can develop into a game-breaker the team has been looking for at wide out for some time.

3rd Round: 30th Pick (94th overall) – Sammie Lee Hill, Stillman, DT

This young man’s stock has been rising, and at 6-4, 329, he is a player that can help fill the void at some point of the loss of Albert Haynesworth. Has raw talent, to be sure, and showed an ability to bull rush at the East-West Shrine practices back in January. Has the ability to be a solid sleeper pick that could be overlooked.

4th Round: 30th Pick (130th overall) – David Bruton, Notre Dame, FS

Another area where the Titans could use a player for depth is at the safety spot. Bruton was one of only two safeties to break 4.5 at the combine, and managed 93 tackles, six passes broken up and three picks. Measures out at 6’2, 219 pounds, and has shown enough to earn a 4th round pick for the Titans.

4th Round: 35th Pick (135th overall – Compensatory Pick) – Brandon Williams, Texas Tech, DE

A junior that declared early, Williams had 15.5 tackles for losses and 13 sacks as a junior in 2008. Had three two-sack games last season for the Red Raiders, and despite some thinking he needs another year in college, he could help out the Titans in 09 as a player that can develop into a pretty solid pro.

5th Round: 37th Pick (173rd overall – Compensatory Pick) – Mike Thomas, Arizona, WR

Thomas had 75 receptions, 834 yards and four touchdowns as a senior. Another big stat – he had two punt returns for scores. 5-8, 195, may be a bit small, but that didn’t stop him from playing well in a number of games last year. He did drop off at the end of the year, and had just 26 catches over his last 5 games.

6th Round: 30th Pick (203rd overall) – Eric Kettani, Navy, FB

Why not? The team already has the combo of Chris Johnson and Lendale White, but they could add a short yardage back in Kettani, who last season rushed for 982 yards and four touchdowns as a senior. Should be an effective short-yardage back as a pro.

6th Round: 33rd Pick (206th overall – Compensatory Pick) – George Hypolite, Colorado, DT

The line gets another project, as Hypolite was named to the All-Big XII Second Team last year with 6.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. 6-1, 299, needs to add some size to have a shot. At Colorado’s recent Pro Day, ran the 40 in 5.05 and 5.04, had a 32-inch vertical jump, 8-foot, 10-inch long jump, ran 4.72 in the short shuttle, 7.66 in the three-cone drill and did 32 reps in the bench press.

7th Round: 30th Pick (239th overall) – Bear Pascoe, Fresno State, TE

The team is bringing back Bo Scaife as the lead TE, but here they add a longshot in Pascoe, who last season had 40 receptions for 400 yards and four touchdowns. Plus he has a cool name that will draw a lot of laughs from his teammates.

7th Round: 33rd Pick (242nd overall – Compensatory Pick) – Drew Willy, Buffalo, QB

Kerry Collins won’t last forever, and who knows what the future holds for Vince Young? Willy had 25 touchdowns to just five interceptions last season. An interesting prospect who could make it as a practice squad player in 2009.
