Two of the more young up and coming QB’s in the NFL collided in preseason action on Friday night in Nashville, as Vince Young of the Titans took on JaMarcus Russell of the Raiders. Lucky for both, it was only preseason, because the action on the field didn’t quite live up to the hype off of it.
Russell led the Raiders on one decent drive that resulted in a TD pass, while Young was still off with his receivers most of the time he was in there. In the end, the Titans left LP Field with a 17-16 victory, as backup kicker John Vaughn, filling in for All-Pro Rob Bironas, kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired to put the Titans at 2-0 on the preseason slate.
Back to Young, who was praised postgame by coach Jeff Fisher. He was just 4-for-13 for 37 yards with a sack for negative 8 yards. Young is trying to bounce back from a tough 2007, and so far in game action, he looks pretty much like the same QB that threw for 9 TD’s and 17 interceptions. “I’m not concerned. He had a great week of practice. He’s had a great camp, and he’ll bounce back and hope his numbers are better,” Fisher said about Young.
Russell had a little more success, as he went 10-for-17 for 75 yards with a TD and was also sacked once for minus two yards. The number one pick from a season ago is trying to get through his first NFL training camp making progress as he gets ready to be the Raiders starter from day one this year. Russell’s 10-yard TD pass to Zach Miller put the Raiders up 7-0 just 16 seconds into the second quarter.
Aaron Elling, filling in for an injured Sebastian Janikowski, was on his game, kicking three field goals, one from 56 yards out. His final one with 5:19 left from 45 yards out gave the Raiders a 16-14 lead. They seemed to have the game in hand when they drove to the Titans one minutes later, but undrafted rookie safety Tony Joyner knocked the ball away from Oren O’Neal at the Titans 1 with 2:10 left, and rookie Stanford Keglar recovered for Tennessee.
The Titans with QB Ingle Martin drove down the field and then hit a big 26-yard pass to Chris Davis to give Vaughn a shot from 33 yards out to clinch the one-point win. The Titans will travel to Atlanta to take on the Falcons Friday night the 22nd at 7:30pm.
