NFL Says “No” To Pacman Being at Training Camp

As was expected, the NFL today denied Adam “Pacman” Jones, a request to join the Titans in training camp.  In a statement obtained via email by the AP, NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said, “The request by Adam Jones to revise the terms of his suspension so that he can participate in training camp has been denied.”  The Titans learned of this decision just before head coach Jeff Fisher’s news conference outlining the opening of training camp.

Fisher, as he has stated in the past, reiterated that “We’ve moved on.  We’re looking forward to filling the holes.  We feel like we’ve done so with the roster.  Now we need to do so with production on the field.”  So for repitition’s sake, the Titans very early on made contigency plans for this expected event.  They obtained former Colts cornerback Nick Harper as an insurance policy; while Harper doesn’t have the skill set that Pacman has, he is more than adequate.

Jones had been preparing for training camp while his agent, Michael Huyghue said that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell never ruled out training camp access or participation in preseason games when suspending Jones for the entire 2007 season for conduct detrimental to the league.  However, Goodell originally informed Jones that he could not participate in any parts of Titans training camp during the suspension.  How Jones’ agent overlooked that is beyond me; the informed NFL fan at some time or another knew about the ground rules for Jones and what he could not do during his suspension.

In the meantime, Jones has his plate full.  He has three charges pending against him (the Las Vegas melee, the shooting in Atlanta and a case in Tennessee).  So at this point, Pacman should worry less about playing football and be real worried about his legal woes and getting them resolved.  Oh, and Bud Adams – if he is smart – should do what I expect the Falcons to do with Michael Vick – release him at the appropriate time.
